Developing and Assessing Ideas for Social and Behavioral Research to Speed Efficient and Equitable Industrial Decarbonization

Developing and Assessing Ideas for Social and Behavioral Research to Speed Efficient and Equitable Industrial Decarbonization

Meeting the nation's emissions reduction targets in less than 30 years will require sweeping changes to the energy systems fueling our nation's industrial base. Decarbonization of the industrial sector will require investing massive amounts of capital to build or retrofit industrial infrastructure and facilities; construct new factories; establish domestic supply chains for critical minerals, materials, and low-carbon processes; manage workforce transitions; and ensure environmental accountability.

The pace and scale of industrial decarbonization will bring both opportunities and challenges for communities across the country, including those that have historically suffered a disproportionate amount of pollution from these industries without having a say in decision making or sharing in economic benefits. Achieving a fair and equitable transition to a decarbonized industrial sector will require a new social compact with communities, industry, and governments.

Social, behavioral, and economic sciences and interdisciplinary research will be critical to develop evidence-based approaches for achieving the concurrent success of all these important objectives while ensuring that industrial decarbonization occurs in a just manner.

This workshop will develop, synthesize, and assess ideas for a national interdisciplinary social sciences and behavioral research program to support an efficient and equitable clean energy transition in the industrial sector. Limited seats are available for in-person attendance, but virtual attendance is available.
