This position is one of three faculty appointments in the Climate, Race and Place cluster hire to advance climate justice at The Ohio State University (OSU), and is part of a broader Race, Inclusion and Social Equity (RAISE) initiative focused on narrowing a range of disparities. This Assistant Professor position is available with the option to be hired into the Provost’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program with an appointment to a mentored position as an instructor in the tenure track for up to two-years before transitioning to the Assistant Professor position. 

The Department of Geography invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level, commencing autumn semester 2023. We seek a GIScience scholar whose research addresses the racial disparities and social inequities of climate impacts and helps shape adaptations sensitive to these disparities and inequities. Our undergraduate GIS program has nearly 100 majors and has grown significantly in recent years; we are planning to launch a Master of Geographic Information Science and Technology (MGIST) program in 2023. The position will support our GIS program at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will have research interests in GIScience and environmental justice, complementary to our departmental expertise in urban applications of GIS, spatial data science, climate change, human-environment dynamics, and critical human geography. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on critical GIScience and geospatial analytics, who creatively engage technology to examine the social justice dimensions of climate and environmental change. The successful candidate will be expected to attract external funding and have demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, and to teach undergraduate and graduate classes in GIS, critical GIS, and digital geographies that are commensurate with their research interests.

Qualifications:

A PhD in Geography or closely related field is required. Preferred qualifications include prior experience in seeking external funding and experience working in interdisciplinary research teams. Likewise, prior university teaching experience, and demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity and mentoring members of underrepresented groups is highly desirable. We are committed to providing mentorship to develop proficiencies in graduate and undergraduate supervision and instruction.
