Research Description
Joshua Barnett studies how rhetorical texts and processes shape how humans feel about, think of, and act toward the natural world. He is particularly interested in how rhetoric can contribute to what he calls the "work of earthly coexistence."
Teaching Description
Joshua's goal as a teacher is to provide his students with the theoretical and methodological tools they need to rhetorically care for the earth by moving others to care for it. Because he believes the work of earthly coexistence is the most persistent and pressing task, he typically devotes considerable attention to rhetoric's role in shaping the shared capacities for dwelling more sustainably on earth in each of his courses.
